Reading Room

All Other Nights

by Dara Horn

Historical fiction and mystery thriller by one of the preeminent Jewish writers of our time.  This book it explores themes of identity, loyalty, personal choice and justice.

The Jews: An Indigenous People

by Ben Freeman

I like Ben’s writing.  This is his third book, each in its own way positively empowering about being Jewish.

Myths and Facts: A Guide to the Arab-Israeli Conflict

by Mitchell Bard

Solid reference for history and background.  Mitch is the director of the Jewish Virtual Library which I use quite frequently.  He is currently updatating the paper version but maintains an active resource here

Be a Refusenik: A Jewish Student's Survival Guide,

by Izabella Tabarovsky

Izabella is perhaps the world’s leading authority on Judaism in the former Soviet Union.  This forthcoming book presents first hand stories from original refuseniks such as Natan Sharansky and Alexander Smukler and shares current lived experiences from activists such as Shabbos Kestenbaum and Eyal Yakoby.  The paths for young adults today are clear from the lessons of the past.

Why?: Explaining the Holocaust

by Peter Hayes

Widely acclaimed and sourced book that examines the social and political dynamics that lead into the Holocaust.  A well written book on a subject that could use more attention.

My Name Is Asher Lev

by Chaim Potok

A throwback to my youth, the classic fictional story about Jewish identity and expression.
